I recently cleaned out my Facebook feed and it has changed my digital life! If your feed is filled with crap and postings from people you can barely remember, here's what to do:
1) Work on a computer - this doesn't work with the limited features of mobile Facebook
2) Scroll through your feed. If you find a post from someone you'd rather not hear from, click on their name. Look for the "Friends" box at the top of their page, and hover your mouse over it:
3) Untick "show in newsfeed". That's it. You won't hear from that person any more, though they'll still be your friend and will still be able to see what you write if they choose to.
4) While you are going through your feed, if there are any pages or people whose posts you definitely don't want to miss, click on their name, ensure "show in newsfeed" is ticked, and also tick "get notifications". This means this person/page's activity will show up in your list of notifications so you can't miss it.
It took me about an hour to go through my gazillion friends and choose who I really wanted to hear from. But now that I've done that, I actually seem to receive all the posts I want - I think Facebook makes decisions about what to show you when your feed is enormous, and some of the things I wanted to see before wasn't showing up. Now pretty much all of it seems to be there.
And while you are cleaning up your digital life, every time you get email you don't want to read, instead of just deleting, scroll down and click "unsubscribe". After a while, your inbox will lighten up. If the mail is from an individual and not part of a mailing list, then you can blacklist a person's name with your mail server. My inbox is much cleaner now as a result.
